PHTHALATES

Where you’ll find them: Phthalates are chemicals commonly used in PVC plastic to make toys extra squishy, inflatable, and flexible. Phthalates are the stuff that makes toys so irresistible to babies who love to suck and chew. Since 2009, the United States and Canada have required that toys like teethers and pacifiers that go into a child’s mouth be phthalate-free. Note: This rule doesn’t cover all toys, even though sooner or later most toys end up in the mouth.

Why they’re bad news: Phthalates can leach out of PVC plastic when your baby mouths them, and are linked to hormone disruption, reproductive and developmental problems, and cancer.
